I often talk a lot about de-cluttering, re-organizing, cleaning things out and how important that is to keep and maintain a healthy lifestyle. In my 30 days to domestic bliss, we touch on this a LOT. Lately, I've been so inspired by so many different closets, I was thinking mine needed a makeover. So, I wanted to share a little bit of my inspiration in hopes that you will get inspired to not neglect your closet but take it to the next level.
In glam-shui, having an amazing closet experience is powerful because its typically where you begin your day. This is where you get your confidence, where its make or break how fluid your day goes. Is it easy for you to get up and get dressed in the AM? Or is it always a struggle, adding frustration to your day? Getting your closet pulled together really can make life so much easier and better, giving you just what you need to effectively conquer your day.
Personally, I like to pick out my outfits the night before. I even pick out my gym outfit in the morning too. So let me give you some tips for organizing your closet to make it work for you.
GET RID OF WHAT NO LONGER SERVES YOU. Seriously, take an hour (time yourself) and get rid of things you haven't worn in years, what doesn't flatter your figure, anything that doesn't make you feel like the bad ass goddess that you are. I don't care what size or shape you are, there are clothes that will work for you. I am a full figured girl, I can't wear a lot of trends so I invest in clothes that flatter my best features and make me feel fabulous. I encourage you to do the same.
GET YOURSELF SOME NICE HANGERS. I can't stand seeing those dry cleaner hangers in my clients closets. Honestly, I get that its a free hanger but treat your clothes with some respect. My grandmother always taught me the importance of good hangers. How they will make your clothes last when stored and hung properly. This not only is so important, it looks so chic and pulled together, which will make you feel better about yourself.
THROW IN SOME DECOR. I like to treat my closet like any other room in the house and show it some mad love. Paint it a pretty color. Wallpaper the back of your shelves ( you can get some great peel and stick wallpaper from Target ). Throw in a pretty rug. Add an ottoman or stool. Bring in a dresser and mirror. Change out the lighting for something a little more glamorous.
INVEST IN CHIC BOXES. We often don't use our top shelf of the closet with effectiveness. I am a huge believer in pretty matching boxes to hold things like scarves, socks, stockings, belts, things that I don't necessarily need easy access to but I still need around. When you need one of those items, they are all right there in the box. Also, you are limited in box space so you aren't able to clutter up and collect too many of anything. It helps give you some boundaries and up the style.
COLOR COORDINATE. I am a total believe in color coordinating your clothes. I also line my clothes up according to sleeve length. Tanks, short sleeves, mid sleeve, long sleeve, sweater/hoodie, etc. Then I color coordinate from there. This way I know exactly what I have and just makes everything look seamless and organized. I also do skirts, mid length dresses and long dresses. Length is also a great system to go by. For shoes, you could arrange from flats, heels, boots, etc. I color coordinate my shoes....I would die if they were all mixed in.
CREATE EXTRA STORAGE. I can understand that some closets are simply too small to hold everything. If that's the case, then create some extra storage for yourself. You could get an extra garment rack and/or some shelving to put out the things that you wear most often. Each season, I wear a few staples, so I like to keep my right where I can easily get to them. So, re arrange what you have to so that you can pick out your outfits with ease.
( I've been seeing a LOT of these chic acrylic shelves from CB2 in closets lately used as shoe storage and I totally am living for them )
DON'T NEGLECT YOUR ACCESSORIES. Pay attention to the way your organize your accessories. You want to keep your bags full, so they stay shapely. Make sure your necklaces are displayed on hooks, hanging them is best. Stack hats on top of each other to keep shape and save space.
Here is some more inspiration for you. . .
I think this closet is pretty fun and totally do able if you have an extra room at home.
