I never would have thought that just starting a blog about decorating my apartment would lead to my business today. Lately I have been getting so many emails with questions about how to get started on a career in design. Should you go to school? Is a certification in design good enough? What's the best type of internship? Should I work for an agency or a boutique design firm? Etc. Etc.
There are so many questions and I am creating something for you guys to answer them. For today, I wanted to just touch a little bit on how I got started because the traditional route SO did not work for me.
I did to go school for interior design but I did not get a dream job or start my business the easy way. It took moving across country TWICE. It took taking jobs that I really didn't want. It took taking a chance on starting a blog. It took never letting go of my VISION for my life.
After being turned away from interviews at design firms in LA and many, many failed attempts at being a furniture store sales girl ( I hated this type of job. I suck at sales ), I found my bliss in writing about decorating my home and used my home to design my dream career. You can read more about my story here.
I always encourage my clients to create vision boards for anything they want to do. If you want to be an interior designer, make that vision board and design your life to look like that of an interior designer. Determine what type of designer you want to be, create that vision. Get specific and make the decision that you will be that NO MATTER WHAT!
So, "What happens after the vision board?"
To that I say, HOLD TIGHT TO YOUR VISION!
Right now is the time most people drop the New Years Resolutions but if you have a particular goal or dream or something you are working towards, keep that vision board in your mind. Hold tight to your dream.
Sometimes we have to just say "no" to tempting distractions and do whatever it takes to keep ourselves in the mindset of bliss and success for doors to open so dreams come to fruition. . .
Sometimes you have to create a home office that puts you in your zone of genius so your creativity flows out of you. . .
Sometimes we have to upgrade our home ambiance to get ourselves to the level of confidence to entertain and bring the fun to you, so you can enhance your relationships. . .
Sometimes we have to create a work zone that makes us jump out of bed and be ready to attend to our schedule. . .
One of my friends, Hi C! finally invested in a beautiful "grown up" rug for her home. Her exact words were "I am always investing my in style, but now I am investing in my home and it feels SO GOOD!"
Well guess what, FEELING SO GOOD is the exact magic sauce that you need to bring your dreams towards you and YOUR HOME plays a BIG part of the process. You have to use your home to create the magic you want in your life.
