Good morning everyone and welcome to the first installment of the infamous ONE ROOM CHALLENGE. I mentioned to you all last week that I was participating & it's finally here! For all of you who already know the excitement that you are in for, I am so happy you came to visit me! Let me give you a little background on me. I'm an interior designer in New York City, currently in Austin, Texas for a few months spending quality time with my family & doing a few projects here too. This particular room I chose is dear to my heart because its one of my dad's guest rooms as well as the room my grandmother stays in while she is here. This entire house is getting a makeover but I chose to document this room because my grandma is just so special to me. She's such an amazing woman, with such a strong spirit and incredibly young at heart. She keeps up with Beyonce & JayZ, she knows every players name in the NBA, her favorite city is Paris, she is the ultimate entertainer and has a house full of color (you can see a few photos here), and her favorite color is blue! So, what I want to do in this room is give it a young, modern & fresh makeover, my version of granny chic. Sort of like a mix between her and I. Let's call it #projectmoderngrannychic
This is the before. The original room. Ugh. I don't know what my dad & stepmom were thinking. This room is so incredibly boring. It's pretty small with a big window and a little closet. As you can see, its not much to work with so in this room and because of the size, I want to just pour some rich color into it. If you've been reading my blog at all, then you can know I've already chosen the wall color. We ended up going with Valspar Royal Navy. Grandma loves blue and my current favorite version of blue is rich & dramatic navy. When I first got the idea for the room, this room was my inspiration. Of course, my father almost died when he saw that photo and said "Absolutely not!" So, toning that modern vibe down a little, what we will have is a grown up, old Hollywood glam, granny chic little room.
The whole layout of the room is wrong. It's a small room so I get that its hard to decide from the window allows the desk and chair to be by the natural light. Also, It allows for more foot room. I think its better to wake up to the morning light and not a view of the closet. Speaking of desk, we are keeping the old one because she loves it. We also have a pair of vintage lamps which we used in my lamp makeover, and the vintage floral art, which of course she loves! The rest we will be starting from scratch. Here is the idea board...
[I'm loving the blues & greens together, especially the malachite dresser. I'm thinking I need something like that in my life. I may have to get down and dirty and do a little DIY]
