Decorating homes in Texas is so much different from New York. In Manhattan, more often than not you are coming up with ways to pair down and maximize your small space. In Texas, I'm always searching for things to fill up empty space. It's such a change. One of the problems I run into most often with the decor here is too large master bedrooms. So often my clients will be very concerned about making their bedroom more cozy and comfortable because the space feels so empty and big. What do you do when you have too big of a space, but want to feel enveloped and in a sweet retreat while you sleep?
For starters, never be afraid of fabric. I often notice window treatments are the last thing people think about when decorating their home, but it should be first. Fabric immediately gives a space, warmth, texture, depth. The more fabric, the more swanky the room will feel. I love a good fabric canopy above a bed, its so very boutique hotel.
Also, don't forget to paint your walls. Adding color to a room will also instantly make a room feel more cozy. Try colors that are sensuous and soothing to the eye. I'm a huge fan of soft greiges, buttery mocha, greyish blues, I even love black. [Side note on color: don't be fooled into thinking that dark colors make a space feel smaller. False. Certain dark colors actually make your eyesight recede, therefore making a dark space appear larger.] To make a room feel cozy, opt for soothing colors that are easy on your eyes.
Next comes the furniture. Do not be afraid to make your master bedroom into a hotel suite. This can be a very welcome vibe creating your hideaway from the rest of the world. Everybody needs their bedroom to be their retreat, its good for the mind + soul. I am a huge sucker for a small sofa at the end of the bed, if one fits put one there. You can easily read a book there, take off your shoes, have your morning coffee without spilling on your sheets, etc. If there is even more room, add a coffee table (I say something clear/glass/mirrored, in order to keep an airy feel) and a pair of chic sitting chairs.
Have an open window area like this one above in your bedroom? Fantastic! Throw a vanity in. I love a good vanity by the natural light, it provides the best space to beautify yourself. OR if your not a vanity kind of person, just add a desk. Nothing too formal office feeling, you want to keep your bedroom as relaxing as possible, its good feng shui. A small desk space in the bedroom provides a great place to write thank you notes, send out RSVP's, journal, make to do lists, and all those fun kinds of things.
If you don't have an empty window, you can always add a desk as a side table by your bed, or if room permits as a sofa table behind a sofa.
Another great way to anchor a very large bedroom, the right size rug. You want to cover most of the floor in a rug, that will pull the room together. Here is an example for a king size bedroom.
