When it comes to home styling, there is one very important place in a home that says everything about the home. The bookshelf. If not well styled, the bookshelf is the ONE place that will scream, disorganized, uncared for, clutter-holic, on and on. You've got to make sure than any and all bookshelves, mantles, built-ins, are all styled well and in good shape. (i.e. dust free) Proper care of your bookcase, ensures for picture perfect shelfies. Something I see on instagram and social media ALL the time. Here are a few key points in shelf anatomy...
1. I believe in the rule of odds. You have probably heard many designers say, keep things in 3's or 5's. It just keeps things really balanced and looking pulled together effortlessly. I love this top shelf with a pair of bronze vases, a photograph and a flower. The key to that placement is staggering heights. DON'T keep things all the same height on one single shelf.
2. Color combos. This shelf has the black and white theme happening and it carries very well through all three shelves. You also sort of feel a beach vibe with the photo and the shells. It's also nice to see a theme, it tells a story about the home and home owner.
3. Don't overkill. Sometimes minimal and clean is better. The key to this is using all items in the same color. Also, keeping each inset object filling up the same amount of space. So, even if you have to stack a few items to keep the item sizes consistent, do it. I love how this one is done in all white with pops of pale grey.
4. When stacking bigger books, I say horizontal is best. Make sure to always put the biggest on bottom, stacking up to the smallest. I love color coding books. It's a pretty powerful statement and makes the whole thing look organized.
